What You Need To Know About Severus Snape

  • Severus Snape (9 January, 1960 – 2 May, 1998) was the son of the witch Eileen Prince and Muggle, Tobias Snape. 
  • Rowling has described Snape as a gift of a character.

  • Snape taught Potions because he was based on JKR's chemistry teacher that she was most disliked.  
  • The chemistry teacher who has been claimed as a major inspiration for the character of Severus Snape is called John Nettleship. 
  • Rowling borrowed Snape's surname from the village of Snape, Suffolk.  
  • Snape was one of JKR's favourite characters to write. 
  • After the publication of PoA, there was one female fan who guessed Snape loved Lily, making JKR wonder how she had given herself away.  
  • Because Snape abandoned his post, a portrait of him does not immediately appear in the Headmaster's office following his death. Harry lobbied to ensure that Snape's portrait be installed in the Headmater's office after Snape's death.

  • Snape's role:
    told Voldemort of the prophecy -> begged Voldemort to spare Lily -> enabling her to sacrifice her life for Harry -> enabling the protection that protected Harry for so long -> led to Voldemort's death.  
  • Snape is the only Death Eater who could conjure a Patronus. 
  • Alan Rickman was the only actor who knew about his character's fate way before the 7th book was released.  
  • Dumbledore allowed Snape to be a horrible teacher because he believed there are lessons in life & horrible teachers are one of them. 
  • Dumbledore never gave Snape the DADA job before the book 6 because he was afraid it would bring out the worst in Snape.  
  • Severus Snape's last words to Harry were simply "Look at me", to see Lily Evans' eyes once more before he died. 
  • Harry gave one of his sons the middle name Severus, and this son was the only one who had Lily's exact eyes.

There should be a correction: Dumbledore didn't give Snape the DADA job because Voldemort placed a curse on the job such that no one could hold the post for more than a year Quirrel,Lockhart,Lupin,Moody,Umbridge no one held the position for more than a year and Hogwarts fell after Snape was given the position, he later returns as Headmaster but he also ends up teaching DADA only for a year. Voldemort placed that curse because he was upset with Dumbledore for not giving the position to him. Explanation is in the Half-Blood Prince(book) during one of the lessons Harry has Dumbledore.

  5. Love Snape so much.. i always cried alot while readng the prince's tale. so touchng soulfull love story actually not a love story.
    Alan Rickman did ful justice 2 snape.. bt i thnk JKR :'( cnt forgiv u 4 killing Snape <3

    his death was essential after the truth came out because it increased the love and respect we have for him and it created a strange emotional bond.
    although he died,he'll always live,in our hearts..

  8. There are no words to deacribe how phenomenal a character Snape is. He is one of the best characters ever written, not just in Harry Potter. "After all this time?" "Always" this line gets to me everytime.

  9. I love this character so much! Snape was so brave and it really is amazing how he didn't crack or tell Dumbledore he couldn't handle it anymore. Severus Snape is a true heroine...
